Everyone’s a Pepsi winner in the Philippines
This is an honest mistake, but it’s still pretty interesting. In 1992, Pepsi offered 1 million pesos to anyone finding a bottlecap with 349 printed on it. The problem…half a million bottlecaps got printed with 349, which would have cost 18 billion dollars.
I was browsing old Ig Noble awards for kicks tonight, and I came across one that just takes the cake. It was the 1993 Peace Ig Noble, awarded to Pepsi Cola of the Philippines for their "Number Fever" promotion, which ended in disaster when Pepsi mistakenly announced a million-peso winning number held by 800,000 people.
PEACE The Pepsi-Cola Company of the Phillipines, suppliers of sugary hopes and dreams, for sponsoring a contest to create a millionaire, and then announcing the wrong winning number
There's also the "Pepsi Number Fever" phenomenon in the Philippines way back in the late 80's. The contest goes that Pepsi would choose a three-digit number every day and anyone with the number can claim their cash prize (of up to PHP 1 million).
The Scam of the Pepsi 349..? Anyone of you almost forget it? Well I don't...my mother will never forget it. Not just because we have that crown caps with those 3 digit winning combination, but because we want justice to prevail.
"dami pa utang ng pepsi sa mga nanalo sa 349. im sure most of you guys were too young that time to know it. obvious na niloloko nila yung mga tao."
Of course, there are a lot of emotions involved. This is not like the Pepsi 349 case because the claimants here have already invested time, effort and of course, money so their children are assured of enough tuition money when time comes. In the Pepsi 349 case, there is no initial investment from the claimants apart from the emotional kind.
Court drops libel charges by Pepsi in ‘349’ fiasco. The latest in a series of court battles between PepsiCo and “Number Fever 349″ winners
Finally, a new development in the political and economic scene. Something, thank God, Marx and the cosmic forces, that is unrelated to the Corpus expose, the Estrada plunder case or the revelations of Fr. Eliseo Nacorda.
Remember the Pepsi 349 fiasco where only a full blown CLASS ACTION SUIT...
But I noticed that the Pacific Plans blog is run by people calling themselves PEP and PEP349
Interesting post! Our family is Anti-Pepsi because of the evil 349 fiasco of the early 90s...
A very major booboo that Pepsico committed during the early nineties (1991 to be exact) in .ph, it also earned them a very prestigious Ignoble Award. It started out as a numbers game where you would get some 3 digit random number in the caps and crowns of Pepsi or Pepsi bottled soda pop bottles and at the end of the day, a winning number would be announced.
Who Would Ever Forget This 349 Fiasco? Isa Ito Sa Mga Napakaraming Blunders Ng Dos, Di Ba?
The Supreme Court has cleared Pepsi-Cola of any liability for a promotional flap that sparked lawsuits and riots 14 years ago. The June 15 decision, made public Tuesday, found "no proof of negligence" by Pepsi and said the company should not be held liable for damages.
PEPSI COLA's Number Fever sales promo is one of the most successful in the history of Philippine marketing, offering prizes for numbered bottle caps or crowns ranging from P100 to P1 million, on which Pepsi will shoulder the 20 percent withholding tax. One winning number representing a complete set of prizes, is released everyday in contrived hyped-up suspense, and announced daily on television and all major newspapers which all benefit from increased viewership and readership. The promo period covering an original 12 weeks was extended to cover a period of 17 weeks from February 17 to June 12, 1992. It all started as a “mistake” of Pepsi-Cola
Naalala nyo pa ba ang number fever promo ek ek dati ng Pepsi?
The “Pepsi 349 Number Fever” Promotion way back in 1992, i was still a little boy then and have no idea what in the world it is, until i saw a program on TV with a feature on this very incident and recently on the back issue of “PC Plus” which i bought at “Book sale” recently
Dun sa K-mart, may Pepsi plant/lot dun dati. I remember back then, everyday, i'd check the number results dun sa lotto-like game nila (aka. 349 scandal). ... NUMBER FEVER!!! Hehe. Hindi ko na maalala yung ibang mga nakalista
naalala ko rin nu'ng bata ako 'yung FREE YoYo ng Coke at Sprite at controversial "349 Number Fever" ng Pepsi nuong 1992!...
Instead of marking out 18 winning numbers,on which Pepsi had planned
